As the three of us wait in the evening cold for someone to answer the front door of Mitchell Hall, I stare at Agnes, trying to imagine living openly as a lesbian and a witch. I conclude I can’t. She peeks into a front window to glimpse the inside. “This home is super swanky. Are you sure the Mitchells’ are OK with a hippie?”

Lowri stares at her with pressed lips. “We will soon find out.”

“They’ll be fine with anyone who helps Rose acquire a child,” I say.

Rose answers the door with a pleasant smile. “Please, come in. Alistair, the young women are here!” Her husband dashes into the hallway in his gentleman’s slippers, and she grasps his arm.

“Nice to see you again,” Lowri says.

“Let me introduce you to Agnes Pritchard.” I gesture to her with a raise of my chin. “She’s the woman with the special skills we spoke about.”

“I am delighted you are here.” Rose approaches the hedge witch and hugs her.

Agnes’s body stiffens, and her eyes pop out like a Bug Out Bob toy. “I’m glad I can help, but I wanna be clear from the start. I charge for my services. A girl has to make bread, you know.”

“Of course,” Alistair says, squeezing Rose’s hand. “We have no problem paying you for your services.”

“Should we discuss the parameters in the living room?” Rose asks.

Agnes eyes the fancy furniture and shakes her head. “I’d prefer to get right to it. We discussed the environment needed for the special fertility spell. We’ll need a barren area in the yard, preferably flat and clean from yard debris.”

Alistair motions to the door. “Let’s go outside to the Celestial Gardens. I know the exact spot.”

After putting on shoes, the Mitchells lead us into the gardens behind the mansion. It appears under construction with formal square hedges of green boxwood with rose bushes in the center. The back left corner remains vacantRose points to the empty area. “Would this be sufficient? I could tell the gardener to wait until spring to finish this area.”

“What do you think, Agnes? Is this large enough?” I ask with a crumpled brow.

Agnes rocks her head. “It’ll work fine. Girls, can you come here and form a circle with me? We should make sure we sense the energy in the space.”

I join Agnes and my best friend on the barren spot, and we join hands to summon our witch energy. Our hands glow with an amber hue, and an intense surge of energy envelopes my body. I’ve never experienced this, and it’s almost overwhelming. The Mitchells watch with gaping mouths, mesmerized by our magic. Agnes breaks our circle, splaying her hands in the air. “OK! That’s enough!”

“That should be a sufficient space.” Lowri glances at me while she slips on her gloves. “Leslie, do you have an opinion?”

The corners of my mouth curl. It’s the first time my friend has asked my opinion. “It was outstanding.”

“You’re done?” the Mitchells ask, still appearing dazed.

“Hell no,” Agnes says. “We’re only checking the space.
